Safe Fun in the Sun

Happy 4th of July!!! (almost) As the biggest Summer season holiday approaches in just a few days, I wanted to give a few reminders to stay safe in the sun as you enjoy the beach and other outdoor activities.
 1. Water, water, water and water! Drink so much water you become a fish! Okay maybe that's a tad bit extreme, but you get my drift. Seriously, drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day is important regardless but particularly so when you will be in the sun for extended periods of time and your chances for dehydration are increased.
 2. Wear sunscreen, all the time, every time. Sunscreen now comes in a variety of applications and SPF's (sun protection factors). Apply sunscreen to yourself and the kiddos generously over the face and body. It takes some time to become effective, so make sure to apply at least 30 minutes before going outside. Check the expiration date on your sunscreen, toss it don't trust it if the date has passed. Sunscreen should be applied regularly while outside. A quick tip to remind yourself when reapplication is necessary: check your SPF (15,30,35 etc) and multiply that by the length of time before your unprotected skin starts to burn in the sun (ie 10 minutes) = SPF15 x 10 minute burn time = reapply sunscreen every 150 minutes or 2.5 hours. A great product I've been testing out lately is COPPERTONE® CLEARLYSheer™ sunscreen. It won’t clog pores or cause breakouts (clinically tested on acne-prone skin). Super important for me since my skin has already been going through a tough time. It feels really light and airy and doesn't leave a sticky stiff feeling on the skin once dry.

3. Wear light colored loose clothing. Dark colors absorb light, light colors reflect light. Light colored clothing looks more cheerful, softer and cooler. So materials like linen, seersucker and terrycloth are great airy fabrics to wear outside. Fashion tip: pants in these materials don't have to be avoided and may actually keep you cooler than say shorts. They add a layer of protection from the sun while breathable fabric lets in a breeze.

The goal as always is to be safe and enjoy this beautiful weather at the same time. So get out and enjoy the season. Just stay hydrated and lathered in sunscreeen.
